What is the meaning of this poem?

What is the deeper meaning of this poem? I need to analyze it for school but I can't figure out what it means.

Thanks For Remembering Us

Poem Number 48

This poet was sent some flowers

by mistake.

Thanks For Remembering Us

Dana Gioia

The flowers sent here by mistake,

signed with a name that no one knew,

are turning bad. What shall we do?

Our neighbor says they're not for her,

and no one has a birthday near.

We should thank someone for the blunder.

Is one of us having an affair?

At first we laugh, and then we wonder.

The iris was the first to die,

enshrouded in its sickly-sweet

and lingering perfume. The roses

fell one petal at a time,

and now the ferns are turning dry.

The room smells like a funeral,

but there they sit, too much at home,

accusing us of some small crime,

like love forgotten, and we can't

throw out a gift we've never owned.

What is the meaning of this poem?
I think the deeper meaning to this poem is someone who has never felt or experienced love. Should they just give up on finding love, or keep looking? They feel they should not throw out the flowers which they do not own, which could mean, why give up on finding love if you have never experienced what it feels like.
Reply:i think it's like appreciate the random gifts life gives [like appreciate life] and live it to the fullest.

the last stanza is really great,

The roses

fell one petal at a time,

and now the ferns are turning dry.

The room smells like a funeral,

but there they sit, too much at home,

accusing us of some small crime,

like love forgotten, and we can't

throw out a gift we've never owned.

the part where it says "..accusing us of some small crime" describes how the flower just basically sat t here and rotted without feeling love/appreciation.
