I recieved this orchid from my grandfather's funeral one year ago. I did not know at the time that I was supposed to cut off the stem after the flowers all died. I haven't seen a flower since last winter. Is that normal? Now the old stem has a new green shoot growing out of one of the nodes, but, still no flower. Should I be cutting off the stems at the bottom or wait to see if it will flower? Please help! I have no idea what to do and I would really like to see the pretty white flowers again.
P.S. I have it narrowed down to a phalaenopsis or doritaenopsis orchid - is there a huge difference?
Thank you so much for your help!!! :)
How do I get my phalaenopsis or doritaenopsis orchid to reflower?
I can't easily tell you which of these 2 orchids that you have, without seeing it, but doritaenopsis are crosses between Phalaenopsis and Doritis, and are quite similar to Phalaenopsis.
They benefit from good indirect light levels and can suffer from scorching with direct sun. To initiate flowering, place your plant near to a windowsill - or on it, if free from direct sunlight and drafts. East facing windows, in the northern hemisphere are ideal. 62 to 65 degrees minimum temperature at night and 70 to 80 degrees during the daytime. It's important to get a difference between the day and night temperatures, to encourage flowering.
Aim to get good humidity levels, from around 50% - which you can do by placing some pebbles into a saucer, with some water, which will evaporate. I usually place this adjacent to my orchids, as they don't like to stand in water.
I don't fertilize mine that often, usually once a month or so. You can buy specialist orchid feed. If you use a feed with higher Phosphorous in the fall/winter, this will encourage buds to form. Though fertilizing does not need to be so frequent during these months, due to less growth being made.
When my flowers drop from my Phalaenopsis, I always wait for the stem to die back, as they frequently sprout side shoots with even more flowers, so I don't think that you have caused any problems: you may have gotten lucky, with more flowers. Sometimes the green shoots that you see at the base become aerial roots which in nature, would help anchor the orchid onto a tree, or its growing position - as well as helping to collect humidity. Don't cut these off.
It seems likely that the stems that you see growing out are also possible flower stems. You may just need to wait and see on this, and if the overall conditions are good, then you will get some flowers. I wouldn't cut them off, until they started to die.
I water my orchids by immersing in some room temperature water for just a few minutes, every other week or so. I let them nearly dry out between waterings. Clean rain water is good, as chemicals in tap water can shock them. The Phalaenopsis orchids can rot if left in water for too long a period.
Don't worry about not having seen flowers this year - they often start to initiate flower buds in the fall, so you may get very lucky through this winter.
Hope these thoughts help. Good luck! Rob
Reply:Most orchids are slow growers and only bloom once a year. Phalenopsis and Doritaenopsis orchids are excellent house plants since they can thrive under typical home conditions. Their flowers can last for months.
Your orchid must have grown at least a new pair of leaves this year and must be getting ready to bloom again. Just be patient. The spike can take 2 months to develop new flower buds. Don't cut anything just now.
In any case I suggest you research the culture notes available from the American Orchid Society. They will guide you on how to care for your orchid in your particular growing conditions.

I know this is not at a murder scene but in the first Final Destination film you get a scene after the plane blows up where the school is having a memorial service and the pupils get up and lay roses down at the memorial stone, lots of tear and sadness. Is that any help?

Strange Dream That's Bugging Me!?
This dream I had was kinda weird....
I was gng to a wake of a family member who had passed away.(no one in my family could go so I went) Thing is we had never meet this family member it was a very distant uncle...so as soon as I arrive to the funeral home(very pretty but it had a lot n I mean a lot of flowers) I go sign the guestbook n go "pay my respects" weird thing is.... there was no casket the body was on a chair like a sofa... n it was in a weird position. N He wasn't dressed up either.. People would go take him*an uncle who in my dream exists but in real life doesnt*flowers and go sob and say their goodbyes. But I was the ONLY ONE who found it odd and sorta scary that there wasn't a casket.
Now the dream gets scary when I went up to take him some flowers he started making a weird weezing noise..almost like a snoring soung then he started twitching...this obviously terrified me. He then woke up but in a scary kinda way....
What could this mean? Its kinda disturbing me :-/ I'm even scared to fall asleep cuz I might dream this all over again!!!

Short and simple to start the day?
A florist received an outraged telephone call from a man who
had moved his restaurant to a new spot in town. The restaurant owner had been sent a funeral wreath along with a card that read: SINCEREST SYMPATHIES. The florist realized that he must have mixed up two orders and shuddered to think of the flowers that should have gone to the
restaurant man.He had sent to the funeral a clover design of
red roses across which was a bright green ribbon bearing the
inscription: BEST OF LUCK IN YOUR NEW LOCATION.

Old one.. but still funny

Sending money after someone dies?
I just found out that one of my dad's friends who I'd known since birth died today. We live halfway across the country from them and I want to send them something. My husband is Chinese and in Chinese culture, you send money for deaths -- to help with funeral arrangements and such. I think this is much more practical than sending flowers or something and would like to send a card with some money but is there any way that the family might take offense to my sending money instead of something like flowers or food?
Sending money after someone dies?
Preggo not at all. If you sent a nice card and wrote in the card that part of your husbands Chinese heritage calls for the giving of money upon the death of a loved one that you would like to do that. Say that you are aware that they more than likely don't need any help with funeral expenses but that to honor your hubbys culture, in this the year of the Rat, you have chosen to do that. Please accept this small token as our sincere and heartfelt condolences on the passing of their father, grandfather, husband. Love Preggo and Hubby.
Reply:yes they may! it's making out that they are poor. i'm sure the guy had savings to pay for his own funeral.
Reply:The best way for you to handle this is to send a check in a card, write that this money can be used in any way the family wishes, or can be given to a favorite charity in his honor...keep it very short and to the point, also include a favorite memory you have of your dads friend.
Reply:I have experienced someone sending money to me when a realtive died and since the funeral was covered, I gave all the contributions to a soup kitchen in that person's name.
Reply:A card of condolence would do
Reply:When my father passed away we received many cards with money in them. Since the funeral expenses were already covered we used some of the money for his tombstone and part of the money went to the cancer foundation. Many people send money and I have never heard of anybody taking offense.
Reply:I disagree, not everybody have their funeral plan. My brother in law pass away last week. He was only 32. He was diagnose with Pancreatic cancer a year ago. Well when he was unable to preform on his job the lay him off. He lost his insurance so my sister had to sign a letter that she was responsible for the bill. In one yr, which is how long he lived after he was diagnose, they lost everything, their house, cars, and all of their savings. My sister had no money left for the funeral Thank God there were alot of people who were willing to help by giving her money. So I would send them money.
Reply:My family is Italian and we do this also. I can tell you that from my own personal experience, not all people do this. In your circumstance, I would think it would be totally acceptable and the family would understand and accept your condolences. I had an instance a few years back where one of my cousins wife's mom passed away so I went to the veiwing/funeral. Afterwards, my family and hers all met up at my cousin and her home. My side of the family brought home cooked meals to the home so they wouldn't have to worry about cooking. She was not raised Catholic/Italian like we were so she didn't understand our traditions following the funeral. This is common in my family and something we've always done. She found it odd. Later on that week when she received my mass card in the mail with a personalized check she was very baffled and called me again to question it as I wasn't the only one in my family that sent her money. I had to laugh because she asked me why people were paying her for her mothers passing. She was not upset or insulted, she just didnt understand.

Mom hurts my feelings?
I love my mom dearly..she is one of the strongest and best women I know. But put her in public and she embarrasses me to death.Like at a funeral, she will make a big fuss about who gets the flowers people send. At reunions, she sneaks out a bunch of food to take home, leaving people to be mad about it bc she took so much.
At hospitals, she bugs the hell out of the nurses and staff to do things her way right then and she will cause drama and then shrug it ooff while everyone else gets pissed off at her, making it so awkward for me. MY dad is clueless and see's none of this.
On a more hurtful level, she is not kind to my friends. She subtly called a friend of mine fat yesterday to her face, and when my friend asked me about it i was so embarrassed. I asked my mom if she did and she denied it (she always denys whatever she does), so I just dropped it. But she always does stuff like that to my friends and isn't nice to them.
We were visiting a family friend today whose sister died and
Mom hurts my feelings?
I believe you should tell a guidance coucler at school ask them to help you and get yiour mom some therapy
i'm also vary sorry for what you have to put up with
i really hope my advice helps
Reply:It sounds like your mom has some self-esteem issues and has a difficult time taking responsibility for her actions. She needs therapy with a professional and unfortunately, there's probably little you can do to change her ways, other than telling her how things make you feel. However, you should focus on what you can do, like changing how you talk to her and how you react to her.

Are you aware that this is domestic violence awareness month (contd)?
I got flowers today and it wasn't Mother's Day or any other special day. Last night he beat me again. And it was much worse than all the other times. If I leave him, what will I do? How will I take care of my kids? What about money? I'm afraid of him and scared to leave. But I know he must be sorry because he sent me flowers today.
I got flowers today. Today was a very special day. It was the day of my funeral. Last night he finally killed me. He beat me to death. If only I had gathered enough courage and strength to leave him, I would not have gotten flowers today.
